Answer the call of Jesus

What does it really mean to be a disciple of Jesus Christ?

The term Christian began as a description of someone whose life looked like or exemplified Jesus.

A disciple was someone who based their life on devotion to Jesus, but somehow that definition is not as clear today.

Discipleship for many has now become an adherence to a belief or creed without the devotion to the person the belief or creed is about.

There is a great danger in this because beliefs and creeds don’t sustain us when we are at our lowest times.

They also don’t meet our deepest needs and desires for a fulfilled life.

The early church fathers who wrote the doctrines and creeds of Christianity did so out of a deep sense of passion for the person Jesus Christ was and is.

Jesus’ call to discipleship was always the same; “If anyone wants to be my disciple they must… follow me”.

This has not changed in 2,000 years. Discipleship is still based on devotion to Jesus and not an adherence to beliefs or creeds. The reason is that Jesus is alive and today, it is His Holy Spirit whom teaches and leads us as disciples.

If this were not so then what good would all the beliefs and creeds in the world do us anyway.

As you go into another summer where things like; God, spirituality, religion, church, and the many other beliefs and creeds we hold onto get lost in the vacation, remember Jesus is still calling out for true disciples.

Men and women, boys and girls who want to be described as someone who looks like or exemplifies the person they are a disciple of.

What would your summer look like if you answered Jesus call?
