ACT acts needed

The upcoming Aluminum City Telethon, now in its 29th year, is seeking performers to fill its 10-hour run on October 19.

Organizers are hoping to see some fresh talent this year, but will also be enlisting past performers for the fund raiser.

Denise O’Neill, who is organizing the performances this year, said no-one new had come forward over the Summer but now that Fall has hit it is the time things start happening.

“It’s always a challenge,” said O’Neill about organizing talent. “We need a lot of performers.”

Potential performers need not have a background in entertaining or a record deal as the telethon is about showing off local talent for a good cause.

“This is about just taking people who have a talent for performing, usually it’s singing or something similar, and just showcasing our local people,” explained O’Neill.

The telethon also puts on “cutesy” shows with kids, which is popular with parents who like seeing their children on stage.

New acts will need to be auditioned, and O’Neill said they are looking for clean, family oriented performances.

People interested in performing can contact her during the day at 632-6581,

Once again Monique Miller will be the MC for the telethon. She was at a recent city council meeting to request the use of District of Kitimat slogans for the event.

“This year the ACT association would like to decorate the MET [Mount Elizabeth Theatre] in the theme of Kitimat port city,” said Miller, reading from a letter from the association to city council.

“The ACT association would like to ask the mayor and council for their support in the mention of the Kitimat slogan, ‘port city on the move’ and ‘Kitimat, port city, a marvel of nature and industry’, live on air in reference to the relation to the decorations and theme.”

The association wants to also display those logos and slogans in backdrop decorations and lighting.

Council unanimously passed the motion to allow the use of city trademarks - only Gerd Gottschling and Ray Brady were absent.

Telethon performances will run from noon until 10:00 p.m.
