Monteiro picked for youth award

There’s just something about helping people that makes Audriana Monteiro feel good inside.

The recent Mount Elizabeth Secondary graduate was chosen as this year’s recipient of a federal youth volunteer award, given to deserving people who have contributed at least 100 hours to volunteer groups over the year.

Monteiro fits the bill, having handed over many hours to working in the hospital, with seniors and with the local gymnastics club.

“I enjoy helping others,” she told the Sentinel. “When you’re seeing them achieve something they’ve been trying to do for a long time it’s a really nice thing to see.”

Monteiro began donating her time when she was 13-years-old with the gymnastics club and also spent time with seniors when she was in grade nine.

“Ever since then I’ve been volunteering with seniors and children.”

Her ambition is to become an X-Ray technician one day, and volunteered in the hospital for a bit in that department to find out what the career was like in a hands-on environment.

That ambition was spun from one of her older brothers who initially was considering entering the field as well (he is now studying accounting).

She’ll begin school next year and will hopefully upgrade into the program she needs sometime after.

Recently she has been a part of the Hospital Auxiliary’s youth volunteer program, a new incarnation of the old candy stripers. Over this summer she’ll be volunteering at the hospital still, and the Riverlodge.

Monteiro maintains modesty and while she found it exciting to be in the parade as the youth award winner (she’s used to being in the parade for the gymnastics club), she’s really not in it for the praise and fame.
