Admin building a step into the future

Kitamaat Village’s new administration building will be built on the plot of land just south of MK Bay Marina.

But, chief councillor Steve Wilson recalled, getting that land ready for construction was another hassle for the community and another exercise in dodging bureaucratic red tape.

Wilson explained that in the 1950s the land was part of the transmission line right-of-way for Alcan.

And federal Indian Affairs wouldn’t let any construction start until that right of way designation was off the books.

“So we did a lot of work behind the scenes,” said Wilson.

“I only wish that people could understand the type of bureaucracy that we have to deal with when it comes to Indian Affairs and the types of obstacles they place in our way just to get to this point in time.”

He said if you were to compare the new building to the current one, “it’s actually going to be bringing us into the future.”

Wilson credited the dedicated hard work that went on behind the scenes by Kitamaat Village staff to bring them to this point.

“Kitamaat is a great place to be,” he said. “There are so many things that are going on that coming here and we’re a part of it.

“It’s a good feeling to be Haisla.”
