Braves sweep Hazelton Wolverines
The Braves made the trek to Hazelton to play the Wolverines on Oct.24 & 25 and rolled out of town Sunday with a pair of wins to improve their overall record to 5-1. Close to half way through the first the Wolerines opened the scoring when Ryan Muldoe passed a rebound to a wide open Stu Barnes who deposited the gift into the near empty net. The Braves answered back a few minutes later when Josh Weber tallied to tie the game at one. The teams would exchange chances, including an unsuccessful penalty shot taken by the Wolverines' Cory Potskin, but the game would remain tied until the end of the first.
In the second the Braves got out to the lead midway through the period when Ryan Fehler hammered in a point shot to make it 2-1. The Wolverines would answer back when Brad Sebastien's powerplay point shot made it through a screen and found the back the net. Before the end of the frame the Braves again pulled out in front when Shane Walsh made it 3-2.
Shortly into the third the Wolverines tied the game on a blooper reel worthy gaff by Wes Hart. The puck was dumped in and bounced off the end boards and when he went to play it the puck hopped over his stick, got tangled up in his skates and slowly crossed the goal line to make it 3-3. Late in the third the Braves would pull their goaltender out of the fire when Chris Harder scored to make it 4-3. The Wolverines applied late pressure but the Braves held them off for the win.
Sundays game started slower and choppier than the night before. Twelve minutes into the period the Wolverines opened the scoring when Stu Barnes swatted in a loose puck in front to put the home side ahead. Less than two minutes later Jason Gudjonson pulled the Braves even at one. Again the Wolves would take the lead when Keegan Jack scored from the slot on a 3 on 2 and again the Braves would answer when Josh Weber scored his first of the period. Still not done in the frame the Wolverines would again pull ahead when Amedee Marshall converted a nice feed from Curtis Cardinal to make it 3-2. Josh Weber would add his second before the end of the period to tie the game.
In the second the Wolverines made it 4-3 at 12:46 when Stu Barnes scored off the rush to the short side. Shortly thereafter the Braves Chris Harms laid a nice hit on Amedee Marshall of the Wolverines and Trevor Morrison took exception jumping Harms. Before the end of the second the Braves knotted the game at four when Jason Gudjonson roofed a shot over Cory Croft in the Hazelton net.
The game looked for a long time like it was headed to a shoot-out until, with under five minutes remaining, Jason Gudjonson wacked in a rebound and put the Braves in front 5-4.
The with about three minutes left Dave Wilejto back handed a puck into the zone that somehow, eventually found its way into the net.
The Wolverines applied late pressure but again the Braves were able to hold on to the lead and took the second game in as many days from the Wolverines.
