Where have all our regular birds gone? Where are the grosbeaks?
Sunday morning last we had a bit of winter with about four inches of the white stuff. Everyday without snow makes the ranchers happy as the stock can still feed out.
Meeting
L.D. Fall Fair meeting last Thursday. The fair was the best ever, but it took lots of work and planning to make it so. There always seems to be ways to improve next years fair and this takes more planning.
Everyone who went to the fair had nothing but good to say about it. The new horse barn, the first aid station and a number of improvements to the grounds paid off.
Sad news
Our whole Lakes District is in shock especially Colleymount with the passing of a member of one of our pioneer families, Allin Short. Allin leaves behind his loving wife and a young family plus many friends. He had spent his whole life in the Lakes District so he was so well known and liked by everyone who knew him.
SSWI news
The S.S.W.I. met on Oct. 26. at the S.E.D.A. An E-mail from C. Hendicks in charge of recruitment, the W.I. are badly in need of new members regardless of age. They are hoping for new members if you are interested please call Lois Bishop at 694-3564 or Diane at 692-7677 or Arla at 695-6924,
Come out and join and if you have any good ideas bring them along too. It’s a very worthwhile group and they do a lot of very good things for the communities as a whole.
The Area Finance has declared bankruptcy and this S.S.W.I. has lost some hard earned money. Kind of a bad blow for them.
The proceeds from the quilt raffle was split between the Southside wellness Centre and the Burns Lake Senior Society. This is such a good cause to help each out financially.
David and Valerie Suffel lost their home near Cheslatta. Lost it all, but David got home just soon enough to save their dogs. The W.I has previously made a quilt and they donated it to these unfortunate folks. The W.I has donated to the S.S.V. Fire dept. Halloween party. The ladies are at present making things for future bazaars.
Good work Johnny & friends
It’s great news to hear the charity garden will continue, this is such a worthwhile cause. Hats off to you all who have made this possible Johnny Johnson is the one that got it off the ground and all those who were so generous in their giving. It has always seemed to me that home grown vegetables seem to taste better than those from the stores, check me if you think I’m wrong.
Pat on the back to RCMP
A nice little letter in the paper about the RCMP. My dad always used to say and I will quote him “If you can’t say anything good about anyone don’t say anything at all.”
Good news
It’s sure good news to hear that S.H.A.R.S. is going to stay open. This is a nice little family business and we need these little family places to keep going for the sake of our economy. Let’s hope these vandals realize this and leave them alone as they are great folks and they need a break. Also they are good friends of ours.
In my Oct. 21 news regarding the referendum, sorry I ruffled a few feathers I did not mean to do this and I’m sorry. I will watch a bit more closely in the future.
It’s Thursday morning bright and early and look what’s outside, yes sir about four inches of that white stuff. We can’t really complain as it’s been a nice fall.
Where are the birds?
This is something that I have been wondering about and maybe some bird folk will fill me in. We have a big mountain ash tree in our yard and it’s loaded with berries. Every other year the grosbeaks have come and cleaned the tree but so far the berries are still hanging and no birds. We have feeders out also and we have no birds coming to the feeder, other years there are just hoards of little birds.
Caution watch for deer
Another road warning, the deer are now moving, and crossing the Hwy. 35 just past the church. Two days ago we counted 35 in one bunch feeding in the big hay field. This is only one bunch as there are smaller ones as well. So in the big letters be careful especially at night, as that’s when they decide to move.
It’s funny how things change in our way of living. Years ago every kid had either a toboggan or a hand sleigh and away they would go looking for the nearest hill. We even used to have sleigh riding parties on a moon light night. Maybe a wiener roast. These were lots of fun, even the grown ups would come out and sleigh ride. One of our best sports was get some guy with a good saddle horse and a long rope and we would tie our sleds onto the rope he had tied to the five saddle horses with kids on sleds and we would race. With all the modern stuff we don’t do these things anymore.
Little story
The bible says pride cometh before a fall, here is a story to prove it. A farmer had a pond in his yard and in it were two ducks and a frog. They had fun together until the pond went dry. The ducks could fly away but the frog could not. The ducks had an idea. They would take a stick and carry it between them and fly along. The frog could hang onto the stick with his mouth and the ducks would carry him along to find some water. The ducks were gaining a good height when the farmer looked up and said “Gee who thought of that smart idea?” “I did” said the frog, so that was the end of the frog. I would guess the moral of the story is don’t open your mouth to brag, when you are up in the air 40 feet and holding on by the skin of your teeth. Anyway enough for this week, so be careful on the roads as the first snow is always a bit tricky and slick.
Have a good weekend and always keep in mind that God loves you and so do I.
