Christmas shoe box program helps under privileged children
On Sunday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church we were once more treated to a program of classical music to entertain and enhance with the Prince George Symphony Orchestra (PGSO). Presented by the Lakes District Arts Council.
This program was just extra special for us all to enjoy. Although this was a small part of the PGSO for want of a better word the music was out of this world. Everyone went home feeling good. The musicians must have hours and maybe years of special training to be able to take part with the harmony that they have with all the instruments.
This is an art within itself. Every one of the players was professional and our appreciation goes out to all of the players for our enjoyment, for an afternoon not soon forgotten.
A program such as this takes money and lots of it so we send out a special thanks to all the business establishments and private individuals who, through their generosity make this all possible.
Then we have the unsung heroes who plan and work behind the scenes and this takes many hours if not days to prepare it all, so it goes off without a hitch, and what a good job they do. Also the First Mennonite Church board for such a lovely and comfortable building. There was also a silent auction to help support our symphony and this was well supported and big time.
Folks were all so generous in not only giving but in their buying. After expenses the balance goes to help support the PGSO.
Shoe boxes
On Sunday last at the Grassy Plains Gospel Church, Wanda Giesbrecht gave a very interesting talk about the Christmas shoe boxes. Wanda had seen how they were given out to the children who otherwise would have nothing. She showed pictures that gave us an idea just how poor some of these people really are.
The country that was shown was Chile and this is one of many underprivileged countries. In this day and age when the automobile have more or less taken over, these folks are still using oxen and carts in the rural places.
It’s really an eye opener for all of us to see the pleasure that these children have, with such a small thing as a shoe box with little things for them. These shoe boxes and there are just hundreds of them made up and sent out to these children and the pleasure it can give to them. One thing that was special as with every box there is sent out a prayer just for these families. Wanda spent time in Chile so she was able to give us first hand knowledge, and thank you for your presentation. The church was full with folks from Decker Lake and Burns Lake who were also shoe box givers. After service we had a lovely lunch, with soup and buns and some great deserts.
Moose hunting
This last week has been a busy one both crossing over on the ferry and all the local roads. This was moose hunting week. I did not know there are so many quads (four wheelers) in the country. Pickups and trailers just loaded ready for the big hunt. If all these hunters get a moose we will in a very short while run out of moose and this I kid you not. Let’s hope all are very careful how they do the shooting because accidents can and do happen especially in crowded areas.
This is a little story of how accidents happen no matter what. This happened on the prairie, and a long time ago but how well I remember it. On the west side of our prairie home, the living room faced the west and there were windows along that side.
We could look out and see the barns and the creek and also the trail that was about maybe a quarter of a mile from our land. It was not used too much , just a few families down the creek.
Mother was by the window ironing and Peter and I were watching her and visiting. All of a sudden a piece of glass broke out of the window right beside mother and something hit the wall just above our heads. It was a stray bullet from quite a large calibre rifle.
Dad dug it out of the wall with his knife. If was a mystery as all we had for game were a few antelope and lots of coyotes. It was too dangerous to be a joke, but it’s now past history. The hole was in the lower corner of the window so Dad just patched it up with some more glass and it was like that for many years.
No doubt some person going by on the trail took a snap shot at a coyote never thinking our house was in line. The bullet must have passed within inches of mother and it was the right height to have hit her in the chest. We would have never known, it was also just a hair above us kids, too.
A little story
A truck driver was driving along and he didn’t notice a sign saying “Low Bridge Ahead.” Before he knows it he is stuck under the bridge and very stuck. Cars all backed up, horns blowing and all that stuff. A policeman gets out of his car and walks up to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, “Got stuck huh?” “Nope”, the driver says, “I was delivering this bridge and I ran our of gas.”
Take care and have a safe week, always remembering God loves you and so do I.
