The Autumn colours; my favourite time of the year

We sure can’t complain about the weather for the last week, it’s just been great, makes up for some of the summer we had. Our raspberry bushes still have fruit on them, hard to believe. I picked a few for desert and they were fine.
Rachelle Vanzanten has just returned from a trip to Eastern Canada. She was invited to play the Guitar Women Show in Carquet, NB, alonside blues players Sue Foley and Suzie Vinnick.
She is now invited to Edmonton to play the Yardbird Suite Jazz Club with an all-star band. On Oct. 17, she will fly to New York City, where she will be representing Canada. She will play at the CMJ Music Marathon, an international music conference.
Her new album will be available in the Lakes District in late November.
Variety show
The Southside Senior Housing will be holding a variety show Oct. 18, at the Grassy Plains school at 7:00 pm. Donations accepted at the door. This will no doubt be a fun evening as well as for a very good cause. So be sure to come out and help support it.
SSWI
The SSWI met at the SEDA building on Sept. 25. Plans were made to present cheques of $365 to the LD Museum, the Hospital Point Society, and the Southbank and Tweedsmuir Recreation Commission, Wistaria. The latter of the two are for repairs to their halls. This is the proceeds from the Heritage Photo Quilt Raffle.
The museum is constructing a special built cupboard for their local newspaper archives.
The quilt was won by Daphne Ewart, Grassy Plains and the Wall Hanging was won by Charlotte Phillip. Both are displayed in the Wellness Centre.
The district workshop will be held in Burns Lake in March next year, hosted by the WI. There will be a demonstration by Jane Stephanson an Archivest from Smithers who will know how to preserve old papers, books and other items.
Next meeting will be at SEDA, Southbank on Oct. 27. Guests are always very welcome.
A little notation I forgot. This cupboard will not only be for newspaper items but for valuable old-time books as well. Also there are a few Heritage 16 month calendars left so call Daphne Ewart if you want one.
Wolves
Of late we have had three very large timber wolves close the Landing. They are watching for the dear I would guess. The three were seen in the hay field across from the church and one was seen right close to Ron Meadow’s house just across from the Partington Rd. turnoff. This one was very close to his house. Seems I stand corrected as these are grey wolves, what’s the difference from timber wolves, except these are very large and grey.
On the way to town this afternoon I just happened to notice all the lovely fall colours. I would say this is my favourite season of the year.
Chimney cleaning
How many of you folks have decided that you should clean the chimney and the stove pipes? It’s a good idea to do it while the weather is nice. This is a must and to be safe this winer get cracking. I did ours today and it’s a lousy job, dusty and ashes all over and soot in your hair, but best to take the bull by the horns and do it. Don’t wait.
I use a big shop vac and a word of warning with them too. They do a great job but be careful as you can have an accident.
One of my friends was cleaning his stove and there was a spark left and it landed in the vacuum. It was one with the bag and as he turned around it blew up, hot ashes all over his living room.
The bag also burst into flames, he says it’s a good thing as he was just going to put it away in the closet. It would have burnt down his home and he would wonder what caused it. Another couple also had a big shop vac like ours and they were cleaning the heater and the pipes, the fire had been out for two days. They stored the shop vac in the garage and thought nothing of it. During the night one of them happened to look out the window and smoke was coming out the shop door. They got the vacuum outside and they managed to put the fire out.
They would have lost everything if they if they hadn’t gotten up when they did. Just because the fire is out sometimes sparks will smoulder for a long time. This is just a warning I would like to pass on.
A little story
A couple of Norwegian boys Sven and Ole were out hunting deer and they sot the biggest buck they had ever seen. On the way back to the truck they were dragging the deer by the back feet. It was a hard pull as the antlers were always getting hung up in the bush, it was a tough journey. On the way they ran into the game warden who also was a Norwegian. “Whoa der boys vat you got, sure a nice von dat you have der. “Yes, ve sure proud of dat vun,” replies Ole. “Ya know though, it sur vould be a whole lot easier if you vas draggin him by de antlers instead of da feet,” says the warden as he leaves. After awhile Ole looks at Sven and says, “Ya know Sven, this is a lot easier.” “Oh ya,” says Sven, “But you know Ole, we’re gettin farder and farder away from da truck.”
Thought for the day
Sometimes we are so busy adding up our troubles we forget to count our blessings. Take care now and remember it’s an ill wind that doesn’t do anybody some good even if it’s the undertaker. Drive with care and take time to enjoy the fall colours, as they will make your day. Take time to remember God loves you a lot and so do I.
