Village looking at accessibility options
As previously reported by Lakes District News in the issue of Oct. 24, 2009 the Burns Lake Curling Club has requested assistance from the Village of Burns Lake (VBL) for the installation of a dehumidifier to combat surface mould and mildew and have also requested the installation of a chair lift for seniors and individuals with a mobility impairment.
Gerald Eckland, president of the curling club contacted the VBL director of recreation services, Susan Schienbein regarding the issues.
A quote for a domestic stair lift had been attained by Eckland however the B.C. Safety Authority and the Municipal Insurance Association do not allow the installation of a domestic device into a public, municipally owned building.
Schienbein noted that there were other options and had presented quotes for compliant commercial stair-lifts to council for approval and consideration in the next budget.
A quote received by the VBL for a compliant seat lift was $18,750 while a quote for a stair lift came to $28,750.
A second hand dehumidifier was recently given to the curling club from the Smithers Curling Club and installation costs have been quoted as approximately $1,400 with additional costing for ducting.
Schienbein noted that there was no budget allocation for the 2009 period for any of the items however she noted that there would likely be grant money that could be applied for the stair lift.
