New resident to the area Debbie Reimer is hoping that what happened to her beloved horse Joe is not indicative of what usually happens to animals in Burns Lake.
In the early hours of Oct. 8, 2009, 37 year old Joe was shot in the shoulder at close range by a high powered rifle.
Reimer, who went to check on Joe and her nine other horses noticed something was terribly wrong with her 'special friend'.
"We took him back to the house, he hardly made it," she said.
"He was unable to walk, I did not know what had happened to him at this point," Reimer said.
"I noticed there was a hole the size of my pinky finger in his shoulder so I nursed Joe as best I could," she added.
"We didn't know Joe had been shot," Reimer said in tears.
"He was a good boy, he never did anything wrong, we called him Old Faithful sometimes because he was a horse you could count on to teach kids to ride," she said.
"A conservation officer came out and told us that Joe had been shot at close range, they told us it was with a high powered rife and we had to put Joe down," she said.
"It was the worst day of my life," Reimer said.
Joe sustained extensive injuries due to the single shot. The bullet had gone through the humorous bone completely shattering it.
"He could not even walk," said Reimer.
According to Reimer her horses were housed in a very public area.
"Someone must have seen or heard something," she said.
The field the horses were in on Kelly Road was an open field, close to the highway and close to neighbours.
"We were worried about the horses and any cougars that might be about, little did we know that we should be worrying about people shooting horses too," Reimer said tearfully.
The Burns Lake RCMP are currently investigating the shooting. If anyone has any information they are asked to call the local RCMP at 250-692-7171.
