Who wants lukewarm love? Give him your whole heart
Failed relationships suffer from one root problem, lukewarm love. One thing the bible is very clear about is that God must have priority in our hearts—or he’ll have nothing at all. He will not have half your heart or share you with some other love.
You wouldn’t stand for it in your own relationship, so why should God?
Those guilty of a failed relationship with God are quick to say, “I tried God, but he didn’t work for me.” The problem is not that God failed them, but that they failed to give him their whole heart from the start.
Many people want the benefits of God’s love, without commitment to him. But Jesus warned people to count the cost before following him. “He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that does not pick up his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.” - Matthew 10:37,38.
Jesus is not saying we shouldn’t love family, but that he is to have priority in our hearts. So if you want the power of God’s love in your life, you must give him your whole heart—not half—and he cannot be fooled!
Genuine love is marked by kindness and loyalty. Jesus said those who claim to love him but continue to do things that grieve him, are liars. He added that those who love him will believe his word and defend his honour. (Wouldn’t you expect the same?)
Another proof of genuine love is endurance. Jesus warned that if we love him, our families may not approve, our friends may think were too religious, we may be hated, while yet others may lose their lives. Are you prepared to love him in spite of these? You have to love someone with all your heart to even entertain the thought of dying for them. But Jesus did this very thing for us didn’t he?
And there’s only one way that he’s worthy to be loved back — and that’s with all our hearts.
