Members of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra recently travelled to Burns Lake to perform a Sunday afternoon concert at the First Mennonite Church. The sold out event was enjoyed by all with the orchestra performing a number of classical favourites.

First of all, it was great to see everyone who volunteered and/or supported by your attendance the Prince George Symphony Orchestra (PGSO) performance.

We had a wonderful and appreciative audience - a full house.

The music was beautiful and the orchestra, conductor and general manager came away very impressed with Burns Lake.

They enjoyed a tasty lunch, and we helped the PGSO raise over $2,300, in addition to the fee they received for playing.

The funds raised were comprised of money from the silent auction, from the concession, and from tax-deductible donations and season tickets sold at the PGSO table in the lobby at intermission.

Les Dala, the PGSO music director and conductor, commented on his amazement at the size of the audience relative to the population of our community: "For the size of Burns Lake, this is a truly remarkable turn-out. I'm stunned. If we could get even one per cent of the population of Prince George out to our symphony concerts in the city, we'd fill Vanier Hall for every performance."

A PGSO board member, a member of the board's fund-raising committee, and the manager of the Ramada Inn (a major corporate sponsor of the PGSO) were also in attendance, and spoke glowingly of the community of Burns Lake.

So, the orchestra did well, the audience had a wonderful afternoon - and it was a great day for the Lakes District.

The next performance in the Arts Council's fourth season is on  Nov. 10 at 7:30 pm in the Lakes District Secondary school multi purpose room:  'Jake's Gift', a one-woman drama production written and performed by Vancouver actress Julia Mackey.

The play tells the story of Jake, a Canadian WWII veteran who returns to Normandy for the 60 anniversary of D-Day.

He meets 10-year-old Isabelle, who along with her classmates helps to maintain the graves of the fallen Canadian soldiers - one of whom is Jake's brother. The play is funny and dramatic (and yes, it is sad) - and it is ultimately life affirming. It is a magnificent piece of theatre, which you won't want to miss.

To open the evening, Rita Francis from Mackenzie and Therese Martin from Prince George ('Martin and Francis') will sing songs of the WWII years.

Legion veterans have been invited to be our guests for the evening, and will be piped into the multi purpose room by local piper Jan Morgan.

The play is about memories - and we promise you memories that will last a long time.

Plan to join us on the eve of Remembrance Day to honour 'The Greatest Generation'.

Tickets for this performance are still available at Process 4 circle arts Gallery, 250-692-3434.

The store is open 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Monday, 10:00 pm to 5:00 pm Tuesday to Friday, and 10:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturday.
