Kings clip Wolverines

The Hazelton Wolverines scored four goals against the Terrace River Kings on Saturday in Terrace but it wasn’t enough in the end as penalties played a factor and the Wolverines fell 5-4 in the dying minutes of the game.

After defeating the River Kings a few weeks ago, Terrace was on a mission but only succeeded after the Wolverines started taking too many penalties in the final period of the game. Leading 4-2 in the second, they couldn’t hold on and net minder Cody Smith picked up his first loss of the year.

General Manager Jack Sebastian said the team played well even though they had a short bench.

“The guys played excellent and gave 100 per cent,” he said. “They have come a long ways and they are really committed and they really look after each other and are trying hard.”

Sebastian said there has been some controversy over a few new players but doesn’t understand where the concerns are coming from.

“We have a core group of 30 guys and we have only brought in three outsiders to help us where we are a little weak,” he explained. “We are bringing in Matt Kerr and Amadee Marshall who are all from Hazelton and they both score goals. Lou Parent Jr. we have been trying to bring in as well who is from Hazelton. We want to win this year and we are trying to mold a good team. All the guys like the few players we did bring in.”

Of the three new players, one, Curtis Cardinal, already lives here permanently and the other two are trying to move here, he said, adding that the new players called and asked if they could play on the team.

“These guys phoned us because they want to move here and they want to play for us and all the guys like them,” Sebastian said. “The guys are having a great year and they have really become dedicated to this team and they are committed. I would hate to see anything change that.”

The next game will be in Vanderhoof against the Omenica Ice for a double header this weekend.
