Editor:

After Boyd Brown’s learned dissertation in last week’s paper, some of us are eager to learn how to effectively deal with the curse of global warming.

But first things first.

No, Mr. Brown, I haven’t forgotten that “carbon is the basic building block of life.” But I have to admit that since I returned home from a POW camp in 1946, I have nary given it a thought.

That just goes to show how some of us heedlessly saunter through life.

This is obviously not applicable to you. And since you abhor our “unsustainable lifestyle,” we may rightly assume that you do not make use of “ancient complex carbon compounds: to power your lifestyle.

Which raises the question: how do you cope without a motor vehicle, or a gas furnace, or a hot-water heater - or electricity - for that matter? (You never know whether there isn’t a diesel generator somewhere in the works)

But are solar heating and wind power alone really adequate? Also, since highly polluting passenger jets must be out of the question, are bicycle trips to Vancouver not a bit of a drag?
