Setting the record straight
Editor:
I write to correct a factual error in a recent article (Oct. 21) that could lead readers to an inappropriate conclusion regarding my position on the open season moose hunt in region 6 on the Tahltan traditional territories.
Contrary to what was written, I do not advocate for a restriction of moose hunting access at this time.
What I do support is further work on a local moose population inventory, as called for by the people living in that area.
With inventory data that all sides have confidence in, then appropriate management techniques can be agreed upon.
Depending on the inventory results, these may or may not include a limited entry hunt or other tools to ensure healthy moose populations.
On a larger picture, it is this type of work that needs to be done in advance if we hope to be able to properly assess the impact of our other activities on the land as well.
For instance, the impacts on wildlife populations of potential mining development that may occur as a result of the proposed Hwy 37 transmission line.
Taking on these on-the-ground studies now, which can take several years for the best results, is imperative to successful development in the future.
After all, if you don’t have a clear picture of what you have, it makes it extremely difficult to make decisions to ensure a healthy and prosperous future for all living in Stikine.
