Contractor ready for water plan
Work is expected to start on the South Hazelton water project this week as the Regional District manager of Works and Service, Roger Tooms said the contractor is ready to go.
“Things are going ahead as planned this week and the contractor is scheduled to start work at both the firehall and the water treatment site,” he said. “Bear Creek has been awarded the civil contract and we have ordered the tanks but they won’t be delivered until the spring. The work that will happen now will be putting the water main in from the road in front of the fire hall into the fire hall property. Some site work will be done there as well but we can’t go too far until we have the actual blue prints and the tank is here.
“Up top, they will go in and do some clearing, fixing up the road and we are going to cross the creek with the electrical line and then they will run that all the way up to the top with the communications line to the disinfection site. They may even get a new intake in as well.
“We have a schedule that may take them to the end of November but what we get done will get done and we most likely won’t be back until the snow melts in the spring.”
In addition to the actual site work, Tooms said they are starting to work with the Water District Improvement Board in South Hazelton and the District of New Hazelton.
“We need to do a lot of work taking over the water board now,” he said. “We need to find someone to operate the system for us and we hope to talk with the District of New Hazelton more as well.”
Residents can expect to see activity in the area and signs going up early in the week, he added.
