The Skeena Stikine Forest District has chosen the Smithers Food Bank as this year’s charity supported through the 2009 Community Charity Auction.

The auction began in 1989 by district staff, and the total money raised by Ministry of Forest and Range staff since then is over $75,400, through donations from businesses and individuals from the Smithers, Hazelton, and Telkwa areas.

“From what we’ve heard about the need for the food bank, the group had consensus to go to the food bank this year,” Bernie Mattie, auction committee chairperson said. One-hundred-per-cent of the auction proceeds will go towards the Smithers Food Bank, Mattie added, and direct donations will also be accepted.

This year Glacier Toyota will be hosting the auction in its showroom on Tatlow Rd. and Hwy. 16. Admission to the auction is free, however if a non-perishable food item is brought for a donation your name will be entered into a draw for a prize. A silent auction will be held from Oct. 27 to 30, until 4 p.m. On Oct. 30 the live auction will begin at 4 p.m. to 7. Attendees are urged to come in their Halloween costumes to vie for best costume — and the prize that goes with it.

Items are currently being accepted for the auction, and anybody with an item they wish to donate can contact Bernie Mattie or the Skeena Stikine Forest District at 250-847-6300. Items are being accepted until Oct. 30.

“People can contact the district office and we can e-mail or fax them the auction list,” Mattie said.
