On Saturday afternoon there was a shooting on Highway 16, between Sixteenth and Nineteenth avenue. After receiving information that a suspected stolen truck was headed to Smithers, RCMP Officers stopped a vehicle matching the stolen trucks description, and attempted to remove the driver.
As RCMP Members were removing the driver, the truck sped away, pulling one of the officers with him. Subsequently the RCMP Member fired his sidearm and the driver was hit.
The 24-year-old male driver was quickly rushed to Bulkley Valley District Hospital.
The extent of the drivers injuries have not been released, however he was later flown to Vancouver in serious, but stable condition.
After the incident the area was blocked off, and cars being diverted drove by only to see two large objects under blue tarps. One had slide off the road and halted in the ditch. An Investigation by local officers began immediately and continued all day long and into the night.
A senior investigator has been brought into Smithers, along with Officers from the North District Major Crime Unit in Prince George, to head up the investigation.
