Luckies take Braves at home opener
The Houston Luckies took their home opener in convincing fashion with a 7 – 1 victory over the Burns Lake Braves on Saturday night at the Claude Parish Memorial Arena.
The entire team showed a strong effort with Luckies goalie Don Kenzle facing 31 shots with only one goal against, while Burns Lake goalie saw 52 shots on net with seven goals against.
Brandon Ophus and John Marren had a pair of goals each, with Makowichuk, Gudjonson and Dinelle notching a point each.
Even with the lopsided score, Luckies head coach Shane Brienen is not about to take the Burns Lake team lightly.
“Burns Lake came out hard in the first period, they had us penned up pretty good in our own end,” Brienen said. “If they hadn’t gotten into penalty trouble, I think the result of that game would have been different.”
With the addition of a younger group of players such as Kyle Crump and Brandon Weber to the Luckies team, they seem to be in better shape, and faster. That mixed with their seasoned veterans could prove to be a successful mix.
The game was not without fisticuffs, much to the delight of the home crowd.
“I thought it would be chippier after the score was 5 – 0, but it wasn’t bad.” Brienen said. “At the end of the game, we got the result we wanted.”
The Luckies will head to Burns Lake after the Thanksgiving weekend to face the Burns Lake Braves in their arena on Saturday, Oct. 17 for a rematch. Puck drops at 8 p.m.
