To vaccinate or not to vaccinate — that seems to be the hot topic right now.

While disturbing cases of the H1N1 flu pop up all over the country, one has to start being concerned about their own backyard.

It seems to only be a matter of time before it reaches Houston – so what are you going to do about it?

Short of locking ourselves inside of a plastic bubble, it may be time to enlighten ourselves to a new way of life, whether we get the flu or not.

You will notice free masks and hand sanitation stations set up everywhere now, I was especially happy to see them in the local schools. Whether you believe all the flu hype or not, it’s always good to increase your germ-fighting awareness.

I’ve always been a bit germ-phobic anyway; needless to say my stress level is at an all time high right now, especially having kids.

Teaching them to sneeze into their sleeves and to keep their hands constantly clean and sanitized seems to be the norm in our house now.

People seem to be divided as to whether they believe in these flu preventing vaccinations, and that is completely their choice – I am all for freedom of choice for all individuals.

I have actually changed my stance on flu vaccinations, as I was never a fan.

The problem is, when you are a parent, you tend to be responsible for human beings other than yourself.

My dilemma is, that if I don’t believe in the flu vaccinations and God forbid one or any of my children got very sick with an illness that a vaccination could have prevented, well, I could never forgive myself.

If they do receive the vaccination and don’t get sick at all, then chalk it up to over protectiveness, but at least everyone is safe and sound — no harm no foul.

It is an individual and personal choice whether or not you support vaccinations, all anyone can preach about or encourage is if you are feeling unwell, stay home — and for God’s sake, wash your hands.
