Since when did vandalism=Halloween?
The witching hour of Halloween will soon be upon us, let’s hope without incident.
Having the holiday set on Saturday night this year doesn’t do much to calm the nerves. While it is an exciting, treat getting, silly costume kind of evening for the little ones, some mid-teens and older seem to think it’s an evening for egg throwing and vandalism.
I admit, I did roam these very streets as a teenager on Halloween in search of trouble, but alas, I never found it, thankfully.
I was more of the dodging eggs and avoiding carnage kind of teenager, silently wishing the end of October 31st to come sooner rather than later.
This has never been one of my favourite holidays. Now as a parent of small kids, it only adds to ones continual neurosis about safety.
One thing that adds stress and really bothers me is the complete and total lack of good street lighting in this community.
This has been brought to my attention by a number of concerned citizens over time, and is a true issue.
If you walk around the streets up on the hill near Ruiter Heights and then make your way over towards the Avalon subdivision, it is unbelievable how many streets you are on with minimal or no lighting at all.
Why is that – especially since it gets dark earlier and earlier now?
Someone needs to review budgets, crunch numbers, and get on that – and I shouldn’t have to head up some sort of a committee to do it.
I’m thinking this may fall under the I-pay-my-taxes kind of rant. Granted, the local District office employees, firemen, RCMP and more are doing all they can to keep this year’s Halloween a fun and safe evening — with bonfires and hot chocolate, parties and gatherings — it would be just nice if we could be in rural areas without flashlights.
Regardless, the kids will all have fun munching their tons and tons of sugar infused treats, bouncing off the walls with candy rush and excitement — I just hope the evening is filled with more treats than tricks.
