Embrace your inner thesbian
Published: October 01, 2008 5:00 AMWho would have thunk it – maybe Houston will finally broaden its horizons and become “artsy” after all.
With this week’s Missoula Theatre performances taking place at Twain Sullivan and Silverthorne elementary schools, and with the introduction of our very own brand spanking new Arts Centre, we may have hope after all.
The Missoula Theatre has been coming to Houston (thanks to Tanya Margerm) for the past few years, and it never fails to blow my mind what an outstanding performance the local kids can pull off with only one week of intense rehearsals.
The colourful wardrobe, the quirky plots and the quality of performances are something these kids should be really proud of. I also checked out the new Arts Centre while signing my son up for private piano lessons, and was visibly impressed and excited. Not only does Margaret Letkeman have a baby grand piano you would sell your soul for, she also has the unrelenting enthusiasm and wherewithal to finally bring a little culture to Houston — and it’s about time.
It’s important to support this particular initiative, no matter how old you are, and where your interests lie.
I know there are people out there just itching to embrace their inner thespian and let their Shakespearean light shine, maybe it’s about high time to make those dreams a reality – I think it definitely falls into that “Life’s too short” category. Not to mention the fact that we have an impressive new amphitheatre to fill night after night,
I am praying that it doesn’t become an abandoned log structure that nobody gave a chance.
While some local parents are all consumed with their son or daughter shining in the world of professional sport, maybe Houston is home to the next big thing in acting, singing, or poetry – the possibilities are endless.
I would get just as excited cheering on an outstanding piano recital as I would a breakaway goal in a local tournament.
When you have kids that have different interests than the standard sporting world, it’s important to stand up and take notice, male or female, young or old.
