Sixty-three municipalities across B.C will be receiving $15.9 million from the province as grants-in-lieu of property taxes for 2009, with the District of Houston receiving $3,259 of those funds.

The citizen's services minister Ben Stewart made the announcement on Nov. 17. Grants in lieu compensate municipalities for services that benefitted government properties, and are based on the assessed value of provincially-owned office buildings and other properties in each municipality.

Since 2002, over $140 million has been distributed in grants-in-lieu to B.C. municipalities, with each municipality sending a portion to its regional district. The money is used to help pay for local services.
