Is there such thing as absolute truth?
It is kind of an abstract subject to be addressing in an editorial. There is no doubt that the subject can’t be covered in such a short writing.
People are always hungry for truth. They want the truth. Newspapers are sold based on the search for information and knowledge of events. People hunger for what is really going on, what is the real deal, instead on innuendo and conjecture.
Humanity has always sought after truth. But is there such a thing as absolute truth? There are many who hold that truth is relative. Everyone has their own idea of truth, their own ideas of what is right and therefore we have no right to argue with them about it.
The problem with relative truth is where do you draw the line? People argue with the cops if they are pulled over for speeding. The officer knows the law, the person driving usually knows the law, and the officer writes a ticket. If truth were truly relative and the officer stopped you, you could argue that you can go as fast as you want. There would be no laws to govern that individual, and frankly the police would be put out of a job.
We all know that isn’t true. There are laws in place to keep order, and there is right and wrong. We know when we have been speeding.
The problem with relative truth is that we look at an issue like the mine, or downtown revitalization, or the possibility of the Pomeroy Group coming to town and we all come to our own conclusions. We think that we know what is best, and if things are not done our way, then it is the wrong way. Everyone has their own idea of what is right, and in the end nobody wins.
Absolute truth draws a line in the sand, and declares what is right and what is wrong. We may not be able to see it, but ultimately it lies in laying down our own perceptions and our own way for sake of another. It is in this that we gain better understanding.
It is great that there has been dialogue taking place in the Courier. It opens the door for discussion and allows others to learn and see the other side of the issue.
We may not agree with one another but it gives us a chance to learn about another point of view, and get us a little bit closer to the truth.
