Snow ride
One of the hazards of living in the north is the coming of winter.
The first snowfall, as most northerners know, is very treacherous. The first snow often results in multiple accidents, and people ‘parking’ their vehicles in the ditch.
Just before Remembrance Day last year, this reporter was traveling to Vanderhoof and rolled his vehicle, at least four times. The reporter does not recommend this form of parallel parking. Slowing down and parking in a slower and proper manner is far more effective.
Excessive speed for the conditions, lack of forethought, complacency and a lack of respect for the first snowfall was the downfall of a good condition Ford Ranger.
We often laugh at Vancouver drivers because they seem like they can’t drive in the snow. There is probably a lot of truth to that. If you don’t have the experience you do unwise things. But it is like the first snowfall all the time there, and we can be very smug. That all changes when you are the yahoo that rolled your vehicle.
Make sure you have proper winter tires, that you respect the roads, and that you travel only as necessary. Your family and loved ones are far more important then getting to a doctor appointment, going shopping, or going to work. Always remember that even if you are alone, you are traveling with them. They are counting on you.
Be on guard, and don’t do what Rollin’ Rick did. It isn’t as fun a ride as it sounds.
