Businesses should be welcomed

The Pomeroy Group and Terrane Metals should be welcomed with open arms, in my opinion. I remember when the “Zoo” was shiny and new and it was, and has been, a good deal for our own. It didn’t “steal” workers from existing businesses and it has provided many jobs over the years. A new hotel/restaurant will do the same and they should be offered a prime location.

As for the mine, for me, the only truly scared ‘traditional’ places are burial grounds and cemeteries. Traditions come and go, changing with every generation to meet its needs. Hunting, gathering, or trapping won’t sustain our families anymore – jobs do.

What is Terrane actually offering and why is it not good enough? I understand that the mountain will be gone in the end, but those 22 years of employment will help stem the flow of friends and families leaving us to find work and it might even bring some home.

Our town will die without people and all this quibbling makes no sense. I am thrilled with the new grocery store – it is nothing but good.

Perhaps future government ‘stimulus’ given to the town could go towards a pool/rec centre or developing the backside of the ski hill.

Both would be a good source of revenue and provide sustainable jobs. The Spirit Square is nice but it hardly fulfills any employment needs. The same could be said for all the face lifting and shouldn’t that cost be bourn by the owners of the buildings anyway – theme or no theme? Speaking of which, how about a log cabin look? We have an abundance of bug kill trees and loggers around here. Seems like a good fit.

There could be more organized activities on the lake such as boat racing, and wake boarding fests. Log rolling always drew a crowd. Remember the mud bogs? How abut some ice/snow sculpting attractions? People will come, especially if they have a nice place to stay and eat.

Finally, the Fort is a ‘collective’ tribe of friends and family. We prove this over and over again.

There is no better place to live and raise a family but the job situation needs to be addressed now. So I say to the powers that be, please ‘see the light’ and let’s move forward on these projects.

Mary Phillips,

Fort St. James
