How many people can say that they are friends with David Foster?

Local Cody Karey is touring with David Foster and Friends Show. Karey is a very talented young man who has displayed his skills at many events in Fort St. James, and around the province. Now he is touring and loving every minute of it.

Karey said that he has been singing as long as he can remember.

“It has always been a part of my life,” he said.

Cody has been singing professionally for about three years. He comes by his gifts honestly.

“My mom used to sing,” he said. “She was in a band for as far back as I can remember. Music has always been a part of my life. I don’t remember what turned me on to it, but they say the first time I sang I was in diapers at a Boston Pizza. It wasn’t really a choice I made, it has always been in my blood.”

Cody took lessons throughout high school.

“I entered into a provincial talent contest that David (Foster) was doing for his David Foster Charity,” he said. “I made it through regional around August of 2006 and I placed third. I was then put through to the final David Foster Star Search competition, which was held in Richmond at the River Rock (Casino Resort). That is where I met my manager, Sue Bailey. She was producing Star Search.

“David had me over in Victoria to sing with a local girl from Vancouver. It worked out there, and then he invited me to be on the World of Possibilities concert, which was the opening of the Crystal Building at the ROM in Toronto. We opened to an audience of 40,000 people. I did the finale song with Jann Arden.”

Karey has been keeping busy performing with the likes of Michael Buble, Andrea Bocelli, Earth, Wind and Fire, Sarah Brightman, Donny Osmond, and Paul Anka, Clay Aiken, just to name a few.

On March 9, 2009, Cody sang the anthems at the Vancouver Canucks game verses the San Jose Sharks. He got a rousing applause from the fans, and you can see his performance on Youtube.

“That was killer,” he said. “That was a lot of fun.”

Currently, Cody is far away from home. He is on a tour with David Foster and Friends across Canada and the U.S. The tour will take him to places such as Chicago, Illinois, New York, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Los Angeles, and Vancouver, just to name a few. Cody’s mom, Stacey, is excited about the Vancouver show at GM Place because she has the opportunity to watch the show on November 8.

It is great,” Cody said of touring. “I am cruising around on this tour bus. It is a bit of an experience. It is just me and a musical director right now, but it will be busy when we are doing the three city New York area leg of the tour.”

Karey has traveled a long way for a man who is almost 19 years old. Cody still gets a little homesick.

“I miss Fort St. James a lot,” he said. It is nice being on the bus because we use less frequently used highways so there are trees all over the place. It make you a little homesick, but it is kind of nice.”

It is not often that a small town boy, a teenager non the less, who knows exactly what he wants to do with his life and feel at home doing it.

“I feel like I fit right into it,” he said. “This is what I am supposed to be my life. I am enjoying every second of it. You can never forget where you come from, but this is definitely what I want to do with my life. This experience is totally amazing.”

Cody is a very humble young man, who hasn’t forgotten those who have stood behind him over the years.

“I want to thank everyone, my friends and family, for all the support that they have given me,” he said. “I could never have done it without them.”

Karey is a rising star, whose career can only grow from here.

“This has been the greatest opportunity I have had yet to showcase and their are great opportunities on the horizons,” he said.

Cody’s music can be found on Youtube, has a Twitter page, and he has a myspace page at myspace.com/codykarey.
