The Senior Boys Falcons soccer team is on their way to Provincials.

The soccer team has been playing well, and has worked very hard to get into the position that they are in.

This is the first time since 2003 that the Senior Boys have made provincials, and only the third time in school history.

“We have a very strong team with a great group of committed boys,” Fort St. James Secondary School P.E. teacher and coach James Waddell said. “Coach Joe Rokoratu has done a good job of working with the team. They have travelled to Prince George to a big school tournament. They learned a lot and proved that they could compete with stronger teams. In Nakusp they had a strong fourth Place finish out of 12 teams and in Williams Lake they placed third out of six teams. Most importantly they beat Bella Coola 5-1 earning the right to go to Provincials.”

The boys started practicing the second week of school.

“Our first tournament was in Nakusp,” Jas Sanghera said.

Sanghera is the team captain. He has been playing soccer for most of his life.

“I have been playing since I was four or five,” Sanghera said. “My dad was my coach and he probably got me into the sport.”

The tournament in Nakusp, which took place in September, featured 12 teams, and Fort St. James came in fourth place.

“We played about three tournaments, one in Nakusp, Prince George and Williams Lake was the last one,” he said.

Sanghera said that the team outworks their opponents.

“It is not one of our most talented teams, but everyone works really, really hard,” he said. “It is probably the best team I have been on since Grade 8.”

At a tournament in William’s Lake last weekend, the team played well, and won their zone.

“We played three games and we finished third place in the tournament,” Jas said. “Our zone game is integrated into the tournament. We won the Senior Soccer Zone. It is the first time we have on in around five years.”

The Falcons took on Bella Coola in the zone game.

“We have lost to them every year,” Sanghera said. “It is a game that we need to go to Provincials. We play Bella Coola every year. They are the only team in our zone that plays Single A.”

The team is going to have to work hard to be able to afford to go to Provincials in Abbotsford.

“We are going to have to fundraise quite a bit of money for our trip, and then we get to go to Provincials,” he said. “We play against Single A teams from around the province.”
