Students of the Week

A group of energetic youth at Fort St. James Secondary School was given the opportunity to share their culture and talent through art.

Dustin Alexis, Deveron Anatole, Herbert Felix, Austin Joseph, Scott Prince, Chad Roberts, and Darren Tom displayed their artistic gifting.

The students are in a Youth Leadership Course. It is a course written by native Elders in Victoria. It deals with the emotional, spiritual, and physical well being of the students.

The native art contained most of their clans. The artwork included the frog, beaver, eagle, fish, a hawk, a moon, and a goose.

Chad Roberts said that it took them two weeks to complete their art projects.

“When some of the students were not sure what colour to use, Chad would give them advice and he was right every single time with the colour schemes,” teacher Colleen Fugle said.

Herbert said that culture is very important.

“We wanted to do this to show some respect to our culture,” Hubert said. “Some of the artwork is going to be given away and some might be sold.”

The young artists are from Tl’azt’en, Nak’azdli, and Yekooche.

The artwork honoured family who has died, or grandparents. Chad’s artwork honours his grandparents who were married 44 years ago.

“We value our culture because it is important to honour our culture because already some of our culture is being lost,” Scott said.

There is a famous artist who is coming here named Jamie Brick. His nephew, Brian Brick, attends Fort St. James Secondary School. Jamie Brick is coming to FSJSS in June and is going to do some face casting with the group.
