Performers wanted for Olympic relay celebration
Alicia Beaman, Kim Emsley-Leik and Fawn Coulson (from left) — all of the City’s Department of Recreation Services – were on hand to witness the kickoff of the Olympic torch relay in Victoria and the following day in Duncan.
Auditions for the Williams Lake Olympic torch relay celebration are scheduled for Nov. 19 and Nov. 22, and the City is looking for talented individuals or groups to come out and share their performances.
“We’re looking for very high energy performers,” says Kim Emsley-Leik, events and marketing coordinator for the City of Williams Lake. “Anything that’s going to get the audience moving.”
In addition, Emsley-Leik says they are looking for MCs, dancers, singers and someone to sing the national anthem in at least both French and English.
Auditions will be held in the Gibraltar Room at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22.
“This is a pretty good opportunity for people to get involved,” she says. “This is our 15 minutes to showcase our community.”
Local talent will join in on the Olympic torch relay celebration on Jan. 28 when the torch passes through Williams Lake for one of just 200 community celebration events throughout Canada.
The community celebration will be held on the Stampede Grounds.
The Royal Bank of Canada and Coca Cola — who are partnering to present the Olympic torch relay — are bringing a convoy six hours prior to the torch passing through town equipped with activities to setup on the Stampede Grounds for the community to participate in.
“They come with various tents and activities that the community can get involved in,” Emsley-Leik says. “They have giveaway tents, and most community celebrations will come with a big-screen TV — just all kinds of things people can participate in.”
The Olympic torch relay, which began in Victoria on Friday, Oct. 30, will pass through 1,000 communities across Canada and will span 45,000 kilometres in distance — the longest ever torch relay in the history of the Olympics.
The torch is expected to pass through Williams Lake with another large convoy sometime after 6 p.m. on Jan. 28, when the celebration will begin.
And in keeping with this year’s theme, “Paint the town red!,” those in attendance are being asked to either wear red, or purchase the signature Vancouver 2010 Olympic red mittens, which are available at Zellers in Williams Lake.
Audition forms for the Williams Lake Olympic community celebration are available for pickup and drop off at McDonalds, the Royal Bank of Canada, About Face Photography, the Tourism Discovery Centre, the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex and City Hall.
