After five months without a bout, Williams Lake Boxing Club’s Harley Mulvahill was excited to compete in the scheduled four-round Night Of The Warriors event in Prince George Oct. 24.

“I felt good,” says Mulvahill, 24. “I was confident and ready to go.”

His opponent in the 68-kg class at the Roll-A-Dome was Mitchell Ott of Prince George’s Shaolin Boxing Club.

“It was a long summer of waiting,” says Mulvahill, whose last fight was in May.

“I was glad to get in shape, get in there, and shake some of the rust off.”

And rusty he was, Mulvahill admits.

“I was a little bit careless; I thought I could have boxed nicer,” he says.

Nice or not, Mulvahill won a decision in four rounds.

“I thought I dominated him in speed and movement,” he says. “I like it when guys come toward me, so I can counter-punch.

“After the first round, he didn’t anymore, so I had to chance him a little.”

Coach Gary McLellan says Mulvahill’s height and weight — he was a little lighter than Ott — helped him out.

“He did a good job,” he says.

Mulvahill is hoping to box in the provincial tournament next month, with an eye on nationals and the Golden Gloves.

“I’m hoping to get [back in the ring] as soon as I can,” he says.

Also at the Night Of The Warriors, Zach Barchand of the Williams Lake club lost a tough fight to Cranbrook’s Taite Stober, also in the 68-kg class.
