The singing of the national anthem at Friday night’s TimberWolves game will be a special treat for fans.

It will be sung by none other than Mr. O Canada himself, Mark Donnelly.

“[T-wolves goaltender] Sean Donnelly told me his father was bringing his car up to Williams Lake, and that he could sing the national anthem,” team co-owner Richard Kohlen says. “I said ‘sure, who’s your dad?”

As it turns out, dad is recital, opera, oratorio, and musical theatre singer Mark Donnelly, famous as the man who sings O Canada at Vancouver Canucks games.

“It’s just great,” Kohlen says of Mark’s appearance, adding that he will make himself available for pictures with fans before and after the game against the Trail Smoke Eaters. Mark hopes to see as much of the game as possible, Kohlen adds.

Besides stopping pucks for the T-wolves, Sean also sings. Last spring, he and his father sang as featured performers at the Delta Police Pipe Band’s Gala Concert.

Mark and three of his children — Sean, Colleen, and Theresa — will release a Christmas CD, A Donnelly Family Christmas, in November.

Saturday night’s game against the Quesnel Millionaires will also feature treats.

Those who are going to the Hospice Society’s Halloween dance in the Gibraltar Room can show their tickets at the hockey game for half price admission before they go to the dance.

Children who come to the game in costume will receive candy bags, Kohlen says, and game night sponsor Tim Hortons will also “do it up big” at the game with giveaways.

Finally, combining Halloween and a winter sport, there will be pumpkin curling between the second and third periods.

Both games are at the Cariboo Memorial Complex at 7:30 p.m.
