Have to cut spending before we can cut taxes

Editor:

There have been several letters recently from people concerned about the impact of the HST.

I feel that the government is going to extract as much from the tax payer as it needs and it doesn’t really make much difference what they call it — HST, PST, gas tax, liquor tax, carbon tax, recycling tax, whatever.

If this will be a more efficient way of collecting the revenue then that will be to our benefit.

Nearly every newspaper has an article asking (more like demanding) for more from the government — more senior housing, smaller class sizes, better roads, help for the arts, the water system, the hockey arena, etc., etc.

If we really want lower taxes, I think we will have to work on the other end of the problem. We will have to cut spending before we can cut taxes.
