Kudos to the Williams Lake RCMP, Safer Communities co-ordinator Dave Dickson, and all of the community and volunteer groups for all their ongoing work in making Williams Lake a safer place to live.

So far in 2009, crime has dropped a substantial amount over 2008 and 2007 due to their efforts.

Community Policing, Speed Watch, Crime Stoppers, Restorative Justice, Court Watch, and more volunteer their time to watch over our community and assist the police.

Some work while the rest of us sleep, or take time off work to help keep us safe.

Thank you all for the work you do.

One fact that stood out during Sgt. Warren Brown’s and Dickson’s presentation to city council Tuesday night was that Dickson has written 100 letters in the past eight weeks to owners of vehicles speeding through school zones.

“It’s parents, unfortunately, rushing their kids to and from school,” Dickson told council. “Heaven help us if we ever run over a child.”

Often when we think of crime, we think of assaults, robberies, and break and enters.

But speeding is a crime too, and it’s especially dangerous in school zones.

And as the story on page A3 reminds us, drinking and driving is a very serious crime as well.

We urge everyone, especially as winter weather approaches, to slow down, stay sober, and be careful. Speed limits and drinking and driving laws are there to protect us all.
