WALT COBB: Go for the gold

As we start the count down to the Olympics I have to say I am a little disgusted with the attitude of many British Columbians. The only thing I can think to say to them is suck it up, Buttercup, as my daughter would say.

It’s happening and it will no doubt cost money. When you take into consideration the bigger picture, there are not too many places that are sorry they competed for the opportunity.

The competition for the Games to come to B.C. started more than a decade ago, and in case no one was paying attention, the NDP government was in power at that time.

In my opinion that is the only good thing that government did in its 10 years. Was it right? That decision has been made, and it is happening in less than 100 days.

The Games will not be of the duration of Expo 86, but they will bring recognition to this great province and what we have to offer. Let’s face it; it is the most beautiful and diverse province in Canada. We have an opportunity to prove that and showcase it to the world.

Is everything perfect? Wake up and smell the roses. When that happens, with the attitude I am hearing, we wouldn’t even notice. The nay-sayers would dominate the wavelengths.

Do we want the world to remember us by how negative we can be when it comes to promoting our attributes, or do we want them to remember us as the most friendly province in the best country in the world?

If we are not proud to be Canadians then we need to find a new country that is better. Good luck.

Yes there have been issues, as there has been in every city in every country where the Games have been held. Does that mean they should be stopped? Should we stop something that has been happening for more than a century, no matter where they are held?

Should we try to make someone look bad, or support our young athletes with pride and go for the gold?

I think we should go for the gold.
