DIANA FRENCH: Taste of the Cariboo great
Updated: October 06, 2009 8:28 AM
Cariboo weather can be capricious and it certainly was on Saturday. Many of the hardy souls who braved the wicked wind and glowering skies to participate in the Food Policy Council’s “Taste of the Cariboo” in Boitanio Park wore their winter woolies.
The event was well organized, the music was great, the food delicious. The wind quit and the sun came out just as the festivities were ending.

The reaction to recent sex scandals says something about today’s society.
When a respected Canadian Roman Catholic Bishop, Raymond Lahey, was charged with possession of child pornography, people were rightfully disgusted.
When internationally celebrated filmmaker Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland 30 years after admitting to raping a child in the USA, his peers supported him, saying it happened long ago and besides, he is an artist.
When late night TV host David Letterman, faced with exposure, admitted to having had sexual relations with female employees, his studio audience laughed.
Mr. Letterman did nothing illegal, but he is revealed as a hypocrite. He delighted in making fun of others (like Bill Clinton) who got caught with their trousers down.
As for the other two, any adult who engages in any kind of sexual activity involving children is, in my opinion, not only a criminal but a sicko. That goes for priests, brilliant artists, whoever.

Oops.
Awhile back, the Harper government was looking to sell assets to fill emptying federal coffers. Some public servants decided to help the cause by selling stuff from Rideau Hall. They sold what turned out to be valuable antiques (including three silver baskets on loan from Buckingham Palace) for $4,000. When the error was discovered, the government bought the items back for the assessed value, $95,000.
When lower level bureaucrats screw up, do they get bonuses?
