EDITORIAL: Proud to be Canadian
Updated: July 02, 2009 8:19 AM
We hope everyone enjoyed Canada Day in Boitanio Park, an event organized again by Karen Roberts and Nancy Giesbrecht.
Besides all of the fun, Canada Day is a great time to relax and reflect on what a special place this is to live.
And it doesn’t have to be Canada Day to reflect and to be grateful.
Every day, we enjoy rights and freedoms many in the world do not: freedom of speech and of the press; freedom of religion, freedom to gather and to protest, and freedom from government tyranny.
Every day, we have access to great health care and education systems and to other municipal, provincial, and federal services.
Every day, we have access to beautiful parks, green spaces, and wilderness.
Every day when some of us go to work, we harvest the bountiful natural resources of this country.
Every day, we can enjoy great Canadian artists, whether they be musicians, authors, poets, actors, painters, sculptors, or others.
We can take pride in the diverse areas of the country and the diverse people that make up Canada.
We can celebrate our cultural mosaic of First Nations and the different groups who have chosen to make Canada their home.
We can celebrate that being Canadian means being welcoming, tolerant, and friendly.
And we can be grateful for our country and its people, which make Canada — to steal a phrase — the best place on Earth.
