According to preliminary results, the Williams Lake Fringe Fire Protection Phase Two Referendum held Saturday has passed.

According to the Cariboo Regional District Saturday evening, 181 residents voted yes, 28 voted no.

The cost of the rural fringe fire protection service involved in the referendum - affecting many residents in electoral areas D and E - is based on a percentage of the annual and capital operating costs of the Williams Lake Fire Department. Residents would pay $221.50 per $100,000 on assessed value of land and improvements.

Some residents may see savings on their insurance costs, but that won't necessarily be true for all affected residents.

Insurance costs and savings would vary with each property, so the CRD asks affected residents to contact their insurance brokers to find out how the proposed service would affect them.

The new service would come into effect Jan. 1.

The new service would then be provided by the Williams Lake Fire Department.
