Drugs, weapons, stolen vehicles keep RCMP busy

The Williams Lake RCMP responded to 160 complaints between Friday and Sunday, dealing with items such as stolen vehicles, possessions of dangerous weapons, and possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

• On Friday, Sept. 26, police responded to 62 complaints over a 24-hour period.

At about 1:10 p.m., the RCMP received a report from a complainant that his black 1992 Chevrolet 4-wheel drive pick-up was stolen from his driveway in the 2000 block of Beaver Lake Road sometime overnight. The truck was described as having a small rust spot on the quarter panel of the diver’s side.

The keys were not left inside, the doors were locked, and it had about half a tank of gasoline. The RCMP, however, had recovered the truck earlier in the morning at about 5:45 a.m. before the owner had known it was stolen. Police have recommended that charges be laid against a Williams Lake youth for theft and possession of stolen property.

• At 4:18 p.m. that afternoon, the Williams Lake RCMP received a report from a woman that a grey Dodge 2500 was parked in her driveway in the back alley in the 600 block of Gibbon Street. After investigators attended the vehicle, they confirmed it was stolen.

The passenger side window was smashed and the ignition punched. It was then taken to the secure bay for the Forensic Identification Section. The truck’s registered owner was advised it would be held over the weekend for examination.

• On Saturday, Sept. 27, police responded to 54 complaints.

At about 4:36 p.m., a woman reported that her red 1990 Oldsmobile four-door Cutlass was stolen. The Vernon resident was visiting Williams Lake and had left the keys in the car while a friend helped unload some luggage on Sixth Avenue South. The car hasn’t been located.

• Police responded to 44 complaints over a 24-hour period on Sunday, Sept. 28.

At about 12:21 a.m., a Williams Lake RCMP investigator, while conducting checks at a dance being held at the Long House, spotted a male with open liquor walking around outside. The investigator told the male to pour out his liquor.

The officer then spotted a can of bear spray in the male’s front right pocket of his jeans. He was subsequently identified and arrested for possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose. He was later released on a promise to appear, and his next court date is set for Dec. 3 at 9 a.m. The bear spray was seized and exhibited as evidence for the investigation.

• At 2:15 p.m., investigators responded to a disturbance in the 400 block of Ninth Avenue North. The caller had told the RCMP that a group of six people were banging on a door and yelling before they got into a grey car and left.

An investigator later found and identified five people in the Chrysler Neon on Western Avenue. A baseball bat and open liquor were also found in the car, as well as a large amount of “mushrooms” under the front passenger seat. Weapons were also found inside the vehicle.

All five occupants were arrested for possession for the purpose of trafficking a scheduled substance. The vehicle was towed for evidence, and while one of the suspects was being booked in a cell, police found two large bags of marijuana that had fallen from his pants. One of the males has been released on a promise to appear in Williams Lake Provincial Court on Dec. 10. The RCMP will make recommendations to Federal Crown Counsel and request that a summons be issued to get the other four individuals before the courts.

• At about 8:11 p.m., Williams Lake RCMP responded to a report that three people were trying to steal a Dodge truck from Second Avenue North. RCMP investigators discovered that the suspects broke into the vehicle by smashing the passenger side window before severely damaging the ignition of the vehicle.

One suspect has been arrested and was to appear in court Monday afternoon. Williams Lake RCMP will be seeking arrest warrants for the other two suspects. The truck was taken to the secure bay for the Forensic Identification Section. The truck’s registered owner was advised that his truck would be held for examination over the weekend.

The Williams Lake RCMP are continuing to investigate all of the above matters.
