Grizzly attacks Bella Bella man
A Central Coast man was attacked by a grizzly bear in the Bella Coola Valley last Saturday, May 3.
According to news reports, a man who does not want to be identified was surveying for a private power company in the Noosgulch Valley, about 30 kilometres east of Bella Coola, when a 900-pound grizzly bear grabbed the back of his head with its jaws.
The bear retrieved the man after he tried to hide under a log, biting his arm and upper back. The man’s life was saved after he pretended to be dead. After stomping on him a number of times the bear retreated and left the scene.
The man suffered severe gashes to the back of his head, upper back and to his upper arms. Though he was bleeding from head to toe, he was able to make it to his pickup truck and drive the 30 kilometres to Bella Coola, where he received medical attention. He is expected to leave a Vancouver hospital in a few days.
