It’s nearing the end of the year and the 139 Children’s Fundraising Society is once again low on funds and working extra hard to raise the money needed to help sick children with the cost of travel for medical tests and treatment, and needed equipment.
The 139 Children’s ran out of funds in mid-October, but thanks to a large donation from the new Walmart store, support from Variety Club, and various volunteer fundraising events, the society is once again able to help children in need.
“This is the silver anniversary or 25th year for the society,” says president Greg Ashley.
“We started out by running out of funds in mid October and Variety Club cost shared and helped out with costs for many of our clients.
“We started today (Nov. 25) with a very generous donation of $4,000 from Wal-Mart on their opening day as Walmart and their staff did haircuts and a bake sale on behalf of the 139 Children’s.”
This weekend the Pentecostal Church is raising funds for the 139 Children’s through a bake sale at Boitanio Mall and at Walmart.
Vern’s Place is giving away a signed Carey Price jersey or picture to some lucky donor. The first 54 people to donate $20 to 139 Children’s will pick their choice.
“Vern’s (Ashley) goal is to try and raise over $1,000 for the kids,” Ashley says.
Cariboo Water Purification is also doing a fundraiser for 139 Children’s throughout the year.
Once again this year Ken Berry at 142 Country Club Boulevard is pulling out the stops on his Christmas lights displays for donations to the 139 Children’s.
The lights will be turned on starting this Friday evening and be turned on between 5 and 10:30 p.m. daily until Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010. People can place their donations in the lighted birdhouse.
Another popular way the society raises funds is through their annual pictures with Santa program which begins this weekend.
This year 139 Children’s has set up their Santa photo sessions in the society’s new office in the Consumer’s Carpet building at 1262 (B) Third Avenue South. For the past few years they have been in Boitanio Mall.
Picture times are Thursdays, Fridays and Mondays from 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m.
In addition to photographs personalized T-shirts, mugs, plates and mouse pads will be available. Volunteers will also send out personalized Christmas cards for people.
“Also you will be able to pick up your song book donated by the Williams Lake Tribune,” Ashley says. “It’s a great start to the 25th year, and more to come with the auction and telethon in January.”
