Gumption & Grit book launch Sunday

The Women’s Contact Society of Williams Lake is gearing up to launch a brand new book, Gumption & Grit: Women of the Cariboo Chilcotin, published this fall by Caitlin Press of Half Moon Bay.

A celebratory book launch will take place on this Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Seniors Activity Centre in Williams Lake from 1 to 4 p.m.

Gumption & Grit, contains the work of 23 local authors telling the tales of 39 women in the region and is a project of the Women’s Contact Society in Williams Lake.

“We are really happy to see the project coming to life and really appreciate everyone who has been involved. Women of the Cariboo are strong women in many ways,” says Women’s Contact Society director Karen Kuenzel.

Royal Purple

The Order of the Royal Purple will hold their Early Christmas Craft Sale at the Elks Hall today, Nov. 6 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. and tomorrow, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Royal Purple member Gloria Limb says the money raised by the table rentals will help to pay for the hall’s recent renovations. The Royal Purple will also be selling frozen beef and turkey meat pies, to raise funds for bursaries and hall expenses.

She says the craft sale will have about 30 tables with artist selling everything from painted eggs to jewellery and beadwork.

Sacred Heart

A Christmas Bazaar and Tea is coming up Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Sacred Heart Church Hall from noon to 3 p.m.

The tea begins at noon. There will be raffles, crafts, sewing, treasures, gourmet/ethnic food, baking, bottle table, Christmas cards/Nativity sets, food hampers, and more.

Diamond Dinner

The Central Interior Community Services Coop will hold its Diamond Dinner this Saturday, Nov. 7 at Signal Point Gaming starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $60 each and available at the coop located at 51 Fourth Avenue South or available from Nancy Gale. The dinner is the main fundraiser of the year for the Women’s Contact Society, Child Development Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association/Jubilee Care Society, Williams Lake Boys and Girls Club, and the Association for Community Living.

meet and greet

Aspiring writers wishing to learn more about publishing their work are invited to meet and greet Caitlin Press publisher Vici Johnstone on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 7 between 2 and 4 p.m. at the Williams Lake Library meeting room.

Johnstone is in town for the Sunday afternoon Nov. 8 book launch of Gumption & Grit: Women of the Cariboo Chilcotin the most recent book published by Caitlin Press.

Other titles of local interest published by Caitlin Press are Jacob’s Prayer by Lorne Dufour and Bloody Practice by Sterling Haynes.

Ski swap

The annual Ski Swap will be at 510 North Broadway Avenue this Saturday, Nov. 7. Drop off times are from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, and 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Doors open at 1 p.m. Saturday with the sale running until 4 p.m. Pickup time for unsold items or cash from sold items goes from 4 to 5 p.m.

Mixed Bonspiel

The Williams Lake Curling Club is hosting its first bonspiel of the season this Friday, Nov. 6 to Sunday, Nov. 8. This year’s mixed bonspiel will have a western them, a live performance from local band Creeshu and will be a great weekend of curling. For more information contact the WLCC at 250-392-4636.

Timberwolves

The Williams Lake Timberwolves return to the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex Sunday, Nov. 8 after two games on the road against the Quesnel Millionaires and the Prince George Spruce Kings. Game time is 4 p.m.
