For four weeks this fall Gibraltar Mine employees cooked up breakfasts in a departmental challenge that is part of their second annual campaign to raise money for the United Way.
The fundraiser was awesome and raised a total of $1265., says accounting clerk Darlene Vomacka. Breakfasts sold for $5. and consisted of a Gibraltar style egg muffin, two pancakes and a juice box.
Jeff Murray purchased all the supplies to make the breakfasts as part of his donation to the United Way.
After the first breakfast he found he was running out of supplies, Vomacka says.
He did four breakfast deals so that all four crews would be able to participate.
She says A&W graciously donated a box of bacon and a box of sausage patties. Mill employees brought in their griddles, frying pans and toasters to set up in the mill meeting room to cook the breakfasts.
The chef’s for the event were Carly McGladdery, Cal Barrett, Chad Beadman, Stu Sasges, Tim Potter, Mike Meyers (aka Toaster Boy), Kevin Holling and Ron Myhre.
“They raised a lot of money and made a lot of laughs!”
Vomacka says the breakfasts are just part of the employees’ 2009 campaign for the United Way. Last year, the employees raised $45,000.
This year, she says their goal is $70,000. So far she says they have raised a total of $14,000. and they have only just begun.
“I think we are off to a very good start,” Vomacka says.
Fundraising projects at the mine include selling 50/50 tickets, collecting change, silent auction, bake sale, departmental challenges, prize draws for donations of $20, payroll deduction and donation plans.
“All the prizes for the silent auctions and weekly draw prizes were donated by some of our in-town suppliers as well as out of town,” Vomacka says.
The mine employees have also kicked off a series of four fundraising barbecues, for which all of the managers and supervisors will be doing the cooking and serving.
All of the food items for the barbecue were donated by Save on Foods, Safeway and the Wholesale Food Club, Vomacka says.
“Talk about great community support,” Vomacka says.
All the funds raised in Williams Lake will all stay in Williams Lake.
