The mood was cautiously elated as the numbers started coming in at Northland Mortgage where Mary Sjostrom waited with her loyal supporters.
Campaign manager Bev Haluschak, with a phone receiver glued to her ear, wrote numbers down as supporters reported from various polling stations.
When it appeared Sjostrom was in the lead, the crowd was ready to celebrate, but Sjostrom said it wasn’t official yet, but the smile on her face told another story.
Once confirmation of her Mayor Elect status was confirmed close to 9 p.m., champagne flowed and the celebration began.
After nine years as city councillor, Sjostrom said said either way it was a win.
“I could have been gardening,” she said with a big grin.
Sjostrom said the people had voted for a change in leadership.
“I’m hoping through these difficult economic times we can work as a community to get through this,” she said.
“I look forward to working with the new council.
Gracious about her opponent, Sjostrom recognized the 15 years of service Nate Bello has given to the community.
“I respect that and want to thank him for that,” she said.
“I also want to thank the community for putting their trust in me. I plan to work hard for each and every one of them.
“I don’t see myself being any busier but now I’ll have staff support.
“But the city of Quesnel will always come first.”
