After two terms as Quesnel's leader, Mayor Nate Bello was defeated.
Bello got the call at 8:45 p.m. notifying him challenger Mary Sjostrom is now the new mayor of the Gold Pan City.
"Congratulations to Mary Sjostrom," Bello said.
"She ran a hard campaign. I wish her the best.
"I'm happy to move onto the next stage in my life.
"I love the people of Quesnel and I hope it continues to move in a positive direction."
Bello addressed the crowd of well wishers at Shiraoi House, with his wife Maggie at his side.
As of 9:18 p.m. Saturday final numbers were not in, but council incumbents Coralee Oakes, Ron Paull, Sushil Thapar and Peter Couldwell are now accompanied by newbies Mike Cave and Laurey-Anne Roodenburg.
City officials were still counting the referendum ballots.
