“Your common sense voice”

He has one big question:

“Can Quesnel afford the multi-centre?”

Cariboo Regional District area B director Ken Falloon doesn’t think so.

Falloon is seeking re-election for a second term, area B is the only one to see a race. He’s running against Roberta Faust.

Areas A, I and C directors will be sworn in by acclamation (nobody else is running.)

“I’m looking at it [multi-centre] from a business standpoint,” Falloon said.

“We have been told by industry – twice – this vision is too large.”

Falloon says if one or two mills go down, residential taxes then go up, “big time.”

“Now, let’s look at the centre’s tenants,” he said.

“The Mills. They’ve just asked for free ice time at $4,000 a month. They have a $40,000 debt.

“We need an anchor, not a debt.”

Falloon says if elected officials were to support anyone in there, it should be ringette, figure skating and minor hockey.

“If we give free ice time to the Mills, who’s going to pay the running cost of this thing?” he asked.

Falloon then pointed to the multi-centre’s second main component – the theatre.

“That’s an additional $10 million to go in there,” he said.

“But the city wouldn’t let gymnastics into Sub Regional Recreation for $1 million.”

Falloon questions why the theatre gets a “free ride,” but has never been a part of SRR.

“People need to understand they’re voting for the entire thing,” he said.

Falloon also wonders who will spearhead the Task Force, since co-chairs CRD area I director Mary Glassford and Coun. Ron Craigmyle are not seeking re-election.

“They were the driving force,” he said.

“And they won’t be there anymore.

“What this looks like to me is short-term politicians leaving us with long-term debt.”

Which is why, he said, once again he’s asking for support in his campaign for director.

“I’ve enjoyed the last three years,” he said.

“I thank area B for allowing me to be their common sense voice.”

Municipal elections are Nov. 15.
