Potentilla centre stage at Wells’ Sunset Theatre

Sunset Theatre in Wells continues its long tradition of providing entertainment with the production of Potentilla July 11 – 13.

Built in 1934, the Sunset Theatre has seen many transformations beginning with a movie theatre, B.C.’s first gambling hall and, following the mine explosion in 1948, was even used as a morgue.

In the 1970s the Wells historical Society leased the building and for a brief time played movies and hosted concerts.

Karen Planden purchased the building from the crown in 1999 and together with husband David Jeffery, began a restoration journey which ended in 2005 when the doors reopened with the vision to produce, present and inspire professional theatre from Canada and around the world.

The cast of Potentilla, a play written by Meg Braem, a graduate of University of Victoria, includes director/actor Tim Sutherland, also a graduate of UVic with an impressive performing and directing resume, Jenny Abel, another UVic graduate and Barkerville street actor along with Kenny Gallop, dancer, actor and graduate of Canadian College of the Performing Arts in his first Sunset Theatre performance.

Potentilla takes to the stage for three days beginning July 11 at 8 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the door, Frog on the Bog or Wells Visitors’ Centre.
