Great highland dance weekend: a string of firsts for local competitors

Highland dancers from all over British Columbia were in Vernon on Oct. 24-25 for two major competitions.

100 Mile House Wee Walkers dancers didn’t go unnoticed. Madeline Martin, 8, earning the aggregate award in Intermediate 11 and Under at Saturday’s 24th Annual Sons of Scotland Kildonnan Highland Dance competition. It was the result of three first-place wins, a second and a third.

At Sunday’s Interior Highland Dance Association (IHDA) Fall Dance competition, Martin scored two firsts, two seconds and a third.

The Kildonnan event also saw Kaitlyn Petersen take a third and three fourth-place awards in the Novice division, and at IHDA, she won a first, third, fourth, fifth and a sixth.

Alexandra Wolfe earned a couple of fifth-place awards at Kildonnan. It was her first time competing in the Premier age 10-12 division.

The weekend was also the first time competing at a new level for Lydia Davidson. She earned a fourth and a fifth-place award at IHDA in Premier 13 years.

It was also uncharted waters for Jessica White. In her first-time in the Premier 16 and Over division, she had her work cut out for her, competing against more experienced adult dancers.

She still came away with a couple of seconds at the Kildonnan event and a second and three third-place finishes at IHDA.

“Excellent results at this level of dance,” says Elaine Hansen-White, Jessica’s mother.
