Eagles battle weather during zone soccer championships

They played tough, but it wasn’t enough.

The Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) boys’ soccer team placed fourth at the North Central Zone Championships on Oct. 19 in Prince George.

PSO opened with a 3-2 win over Dawson Creek’s South Peace Secondary, but reversed the score with a 3-2 loss in their next match against Kelly Road from Prince George.

The result moved PSO into a semifinal battle with Prince George that saw the northern squad eke out 1-0 victory.

This left PSO on the field with Kelly Road again to fight for third and fourth place, but rain and snow cut the game short.

“Everyone was playing really well in that last game,” says PSO coach Gerarda Cibrian.

“We could have placed third or fourth. They had to call the game part way through for the bad weather.”

Standout player

for PSO was goalkeeper Matt Pistell who, Cibrian says, earned respect for thwarting some very important chances fired in by the opposition.

“He stopped a

couple of penalty kicks that could have been bad,” the coach says.

“The whole team played to a good level. They played as a team and picked

up a couple of notches since the start of the season.”

Prince George Secondary won

the tournament

and a berth at provincial high school championships in Burnaby.

Correlieu Secon-dary of Quesnel took second place and Kelly Road was third. Fifth place went to North Peace Secondary from Fort St. John and Dawson Creek’s South Peace settled for sixth.
