Prize buckles slated to be handed out at the 100 Mile Outriders Club August gymkhana won’t be ready so it looks like everyone wins.

The August event was supposed to be the last in the 2009 saddle series but organizer Jen Felce scheduled a September 20 gymkhana when she found out the big prizes wouldn’t be ready in time.

That means the growing gymkhana community gets to enjoy a bonus event.

Felce said that results from the September event won’t be figured into the series and winners will still be determined based on scores from the four original events.

The monthly gymkhanas have been attracting between 30 and 40 contestants, which, Felce said, are healthy numbers.

“We see people from Alkali Lake and Kamloops now and I’m pretty happy with how it’s going,” she said. “We’re getting the gymkhanas down to a science now and are usually done by three in the afternoon.”

She said that races get pretty competitive, but it’s all done in the name of fun.

Year-end prizes which include stamped and embroidered barrel racing saddles have been a driving force, she said, adding that all but two saddles have been sponsored by local businesses which include TIM-BR Mart, Save-On-Foods, Sears, Regency Chrysler, Painted Acres Ranch and Pharmasave.

Buckle sponsors are Primal Electric, Total Pet, Little Country Trucking and 100 Mile Legion.

Felce said that Interior Gardens recently stepped up to sponsor a buckle for the youngest competitors in the lead-line class.

Dust is usually an issue at summer-time gymkhanas but the July 19 event was made a little more comfortable with help from 100 Mile Fire-Rescue who graciously kept the Outriders Arena watered down throughout the day.
